VITACAL 1.0A TUTORIAL VITACAL
INTRODUCTION
This tutorial is intended to walk you through the first
time you use VITACAL. It is also a continuing use
tutorial. As such, it will point out the actions you
need to take, in their correct order, each time you use
VITACAL.
I will assume you have installed the program, as
indicated at the beginning of this document, on a hard
disk (Floppy users will be told by the program when it
can not find a file and/or program it needs and prompted
to swap disks accordingly.)
In order to most effectively walk you through, I will
start by showing you a screen, with the instructions as
to how you got there at the line above the screen, and
explanation of the screen and what the parts of the
display mean under the screen. To identify what is the
screen and what is my verbage, I will offset the screen
with ^^^^ and vvvvv, as shown below.
NOTE: The symbol <CR> indicates you should press the
RETURN key.

This is an example of how a screen is indicated. Note
that it is not necessarily the same height as the real
screen. That is to conserve space in the tutorial. In
some instances, I will leave off some of the actual
display, normally where you have already seen part of
it, to conserve space. I will include the relevant part
for explanation.
This is what you will see if you try to run a segment of
the program that is not in the drive expected by the
program.

To allow a quick termination of the program, most input
segments allow you to use a Control C (^C) to stop the
program and return the computer to the 'SYSTEM' level.
This would normally be used only for your convenience,
such as an unexpected guest or phone call, where you
would not want to exit the program in the normal (and
potentially slow) way. To date, it has not hurt any of
my data files, and I do not believe it can.

There are several segments that require you to specify a
date or a range of dates. In most, it will start with
the system date as the default. You move from day to
month to year using the left and right arrows (your
selection will be highlighted) and increase or decrease
the value with the up or down arrow key. As you change
the date, two values on the screen change to match: the
day of the week and the Julian date. The Julian date
(common in military usage) is the number you would get
if you sarted counting, with 1 Jan as number one, the
days of the year to the day of interest. I use it as
the pointer to where your data is stored for that
particular date. You would normally use it to specify a
day other than the current day in which to update your
meals and activities, or to specify a range of dates to
analyze. The value is not stored, so it will not upset
the system clock.

it the paths to the files, I recommend you use the
option of displaying the data files (before you exit

you probably made an error in specifying the path(s) and
will need to set them again.
STORE THIS PROGRAM ON A SEPERATE DISK.
It can erase and destroy many/most files. It does not
require a password to run. An unauthorized individual
(troublesome person or innocent just pushing buttons)
could destroy everything you have done.
The first line tells you that Version (1.0A) of the

not require a password to modify his files. My intent
was to allow the program to be set up with a demo set of
data files to show people how the various segments work.
The names it displays are those from the personnel file.
It will only select a real file to work. If no-one has
been introduced yet, and the demo file is not available,
you will recieve a blank screen and not be able to

This is another of those dangerous segments. If you
specify any of these, it will erase the old pointer
files and replace them with blank files. All your old
data files would still be there, but you would be unable
to get to them. If you went to the program segments
that created those files and ran it with the old name,
it will erase the old file and again leave you with a
blank.
The intention of this series of segments is to allow you
to have different data files on different disks. For
example, if you were working a machine with only floppy
disks and had a lot of people wanting to use the
program, you would not have enough space on the disk.
With this segment, you could create multiple disks, each
handing a different group of people with a personnel
file holding only the names of the people on the disk.
Since the configuration data file is critical to the
running of any of the programs, and could accidently be
lost or destroyed, I have included a way of creating a
new one. It will put in some default values which you
can change to what you need.

This will allow you to totally erase a food data file
and remove it's name from the list. Use it with care.
It has the primary usefulness of allowing you to reduce
the number of files displayed. If you move to a part of
the world that does not have the 'fast food places'
around, you might want to remove them from the display.
Also, if you find you have increased the files you use
so much there is not any space left on the disk, you may
want to remove those files you never use.
To remove a file, simply type in the number associated
with it and press the <CR>. WARNING: Once you have

DETERMINE YOUR DAILY REQUIREMENTS
When you first introduce a new person to the program, it
will ask you to put in your height, weight, age, sex,
etc, and then calculate your requirements. Pressing the
<CR> indicates you are finished, and the program will
then build a data file for the individual. If you
accidently press <CR> before you are finished, allow the
program to build the data file, then go in and change
the requirements. No harm has been done.
You move up and down in the display using the up/down
arrows. The name for the value you are changing is
highlighted, as is your location on the line. You can
also move to the beginning of the next data field by
pressing the TAB key. The size of the field is denoted
by the '|' symbol.
If you want to see the effect of changing your values,
press the control key and the letter K (^K) at the same
time. (K for calculate, as ^C is already used for other
purposes). The calculated requirements are displayed on
the right hand side of the display screen. The program
automatically makes these calculations when you exit

Be sure to set metric or english units first. That
affects how the other values are calculated. The
program has some default limits in it, such as minimum
and maximum heights. If you put in a value not
acceptable to the program, it will revert to the
default. This value is not immediately displayed on the
screen. You can only see it by exiting this segment and
returning to here.

MANUAL REQUIREMENTS
If you disagree with any of the requirements for
vitamins and minerals, you may go in and change them on
the manual input display. This will have no effect on
the program, as both the RDA and Manual requirements are
displayed for information only.
This section works like the initial introduction
section. Note the four values that say no manual
change. These are values calculated automatically
everytime you exit the modify requirements section, and
stored here. The no manual change is not totally an
accurate statement. If you make changes and then do not
go back to the first section, they will remain.

PUT IN YOUR ACTIVITIES AND MEALS
On a daily basis, you will need to put in what you have
eaten and what you have done (2 separate segments.)
Rather than attempt to use the midnight to midnight day,
I recommend you think of it in a more logical fashion
that is easier to keep up with, such as from one wake-up
(0530 AM?) to the next. Notice that the name of the
individual being changed and the date for which the data
is being entered is displayed on the screen.
This program segment is the most complicated and time
consuming of the group. It is also the place where you
will spend the most time.

this segment and return you to the previous menu level.
The <N> and <P> are used, both here and in the actual
foods section, to change what is being displayed. If
you have too many foods or categories to fit on one
screen, this will allow you to see the next or previous
page of information. It does not affect what will be
accepted. If you have 30 categories available and are
only looking at the first 26, you can still put in
category # 28.
Notice that this is a list of categories, not the foods
themselves. The foods are grouped and stored by
categories. If you want to look at the calories in a
soft drink, you would specify the category for
'BEVERAGES' (#1 in this display) and it will read in
that category and allow you to select the actual soft
drink in question from a list. To make the category
selction, type in the number, not the name. This
display will only accept numbers and the three hot key
letters, so that will be easy to remember.

Standard Serving Sizes for APPLE JUICE CND
2 Servings .5 Cup
Ounces 4.4
Grams 125
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ END SCREEN ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Here is where you specify how much of the item you
consumed. The item in question is displayed in line 2.
Lines 3,4 and 5 are the units you are entering and the
standard serving size by servings, ounces, or grams.
The unit of measure you are entering is displayed in
inverse video and your cursor is beside that unit. To
change the unit of measure, press 'S' for servings, 'O'
for ounces, or 'G' for grams. Any numbers you have
entered will be erased and your cursor will move to the
new area.
The standard serving size is specified to the right of
the units. Note that the SERVING option is how many of
the servings in the size specified you consumed. In
this example, if you entered 2, it would assume you had
2 .5 cup servings. The grams and ounces serving size is
for information only and relates back to the .5 cup. If
you moved to the ounce area and typed in a 2, it would
assume you meant you had consumed 2 ounces of canned
apple juice, NOT 2 times the 4.4 ounce serving. If you
do not specify a quantity, the program assumes you had 0
amount of it.
A note on the standard serving. The SERVING entry is a
'quesstimate' on my part. Some references would tell
what the physical serving was and others didn't. Where
they didn't, I guessed. The ounces and grams are the
ACTUAL units specified. In only a very few cases (such
as fast foods) was the serving the actual unit specified
and information on grams and ounces left out. In those
situations I normally specified ounces as 1 for a
serving and let the program calculate the grams. These
cases will normally be obvious, as who ever heard of a
Quarter Pounder with a 1 ounce serving size ?????

PUT IN YOUR ACTIVITIES
The program will ask you for the activity number from
the display, and then the time in hours and minutes you
performed that activity. Pressing <CR> for an activity
tells it you are finished with specific activities, and
it assumes you spent the remainder of the time 'sitting
at ease'. You will have a running display of the time
remaining for the day and the total calories used as you
put in the data. Note: If you accidentally put in too
much time for an activity, you can change it by putting
in the same activity and a negative (-) time.
This is BY FAR the 'busiest' and most cluttered display
of data in the program. The header contains a wealth of
information, but it is hard to dig out. I hope to have
this improved on later versions, using more color to
simplify things.
To start things, the first line has my standard A N P
entry. The Abort tells the program you have had enough
and will enter your activities later. The Next and
Previous refer to the potential activities you have been
involved in. There are over 80 of them, listed in
increasing order of caloric requirement. Pressing these
keys will show you the various options. The Your option
will show you the activities you have entered so far,
along with the hours and minutes you specified for each.
Line 2 tells you two dates. The first is the date you
are entering data for, and the second is the last date
you entered data for. Normally it is intended as a
memory jogger that you might have missed yesterday.
However, it can be misleading. If you looked at your
data files and discovered you had forgotten to enter
things for a specific date, it would be better to go
back and put in a best estimate than leave that date
blank. If that was the case, the second date (as in the
example) would be misleading.
Line 3 shows how many calories you have consumed so far.
If, as with most people, you enter things in the order
in which you performed them, it can be used to show you
how you expend calories over the course of the day.
VITACAL 1.0A BETA Tutorial -35- VITACAL
VITACAL TUTORIAL VITACAL
PUT IN YOUR ACTIVITIES AND MEALS
Line 4 shows how much of the day you have accounted for
so far. It comes in handy when you have forgotten an
activity, such as going jogging, and allows you to make
a better estimate of how accurate your input is. For
example, if you are using the midnight to midnight
regime for entering your data, and at the noon point you
look and see that you only have two hours remaining in
the day, you can assume you have over estimated the time
spent at individual activities.
Line 5 is a memory jogger for your last entry.
Line 6 is where you actually enter data. First, you
will put in the number of the activity. Then it will
ask you for how many hours. The next question is how
many minutes you put in. This is what it will use to
calculate your caloric usage. While it is easier to
understand the displays if you put things in hours and
minutes, that is not critical. You can put in 3.5 hours
and 187 minutes, and it will understand both.
Don't worry if you can't account for every minute of the
day. Once you have specified everything you can
remember, press the <CR> for activity. The program
assumes any remaining time was spent 'Sitting at Ease'
and calculates your calorie usage accordingly.

ANALYZE THE RESULTS
You may analyze the results of what you have been
putting in and how well your diet plan is working. You
will have the option of selecting a single day or a
range of days and getting the average of what you have
done and consumed. Please don't put the starting day
after the ending day, as you will confuse the program
with unpredictable results. Note also that if you did
not put in any data for a given day, that day will be
averaged as a zero (0), distorting the results. A paper
copy of your results is available.
The primary means of seeing what you have done is
available only to systems with graphics capability.
Select the range of days and the values you want to
analyze and the program will draw a graph with each day
marked. (NOTE: It works on a month by month basis, so
only the month selected is important.) Each value
(calories, weight, vitamins) will be displayed on a
separate graph. There is NO paper copy capability for
this data display, unfortunately.

Line four is the standard information on who is being
worked.
Option 1 allows you to choose someone else.
Option 2 allows you to specify the start and stop dates
for the analysis. The date range of the current
analysis is displayed on this line. If you decide to
change the dates, this option will call up the 'input
date' screen twice. The first time you specify the date
you want to start the analysis, the second time will be
the last day to be included in the analysis. Both
options 4 and 6 use these dates.
Option 7 alternately selects a high or medium resolution

Putting in anything but a 'Y' indicates you do not want

Please bear with the example display. It is difficult
to imitate high resolution graphics using only
typewriter letters. Imagine that the graph fluctuates
all the way across the page, with lines connecting 365
triangles. The triangles indicate the actual data
points for the days displayed, and the connecting line
helps you find them in order.
This display is a full year display of the diference
between calories you ate and calories you used. (This
must be a dedicated person, on some days using over 3000
calories that he ate. I wish I had such dedication.
Then I wouldn't have to worry about my weight at all.)
This, and all the graphs, start on the first day of the
start month specified and end on the last day of the
month specified as the end analysis date.
On the left edge of the screen you see the units
asociated with the data points. These change for each
graph as they are are automatically scaled each time the
graph is drawn. The represent the highest and lowest
values put in for that period, plus take into
consideration a few other highs and lows I included as
factors. There is also a slight 'hedge' factor to make
certain that all values plot on the graph, and not
outside the displayed range.

ADD/MODIFY FOODS
This is where you can add your favorite foods to a
category, and move foods from one category to another.
(I recommend you put your most commonly eaten foods into
your personal category for ease and speed of access.)
You will be asked to specify the category, then the
food. A display (similar to that for modifying your
requirements) will come up with the various categories
of calories, vitamins, etc, for you to fill in. Leaving
either the ounces or grams value blank will cause the
program to calculate the missing one. Putting both in
will have the grams converted to the ounces equivalent.
It assumes you are putting in one serving, and provides
you a place to put a serving type indicator. (The HELP
function is not yet incorporated, but will be out in
later versions <I HOPE>.)
You may also build a recipe by putting in the various
ingredients, then specifying a serving size. (It looks
and works very similar to the method used to put in your
meals.) It calculates the individual values from the
totals of the various foods, and divides it by the
number of servings per recipe.

Since most information sheets on food will give you only
ounces or grams, this section will take care of it. Put
in the one you know and it will calculate the other one.
If you put in both, it assumes ounces is correct and
